Restaurants range from an expensive ristorante to a slightly more modestly priced family trattoria. Many restaurants still include a cover charge (coperto) and some a service (servizio) charge of 10–15 percent. If not, leave 10–15 percent for the waiter. Generally speaking the further away from the tourist attractions you go, the less expensive and less touristy the restaurants become. Reservations are recommended for more expensive establishments.

Breakfast (prima colazione) is usually included in the price of accommodation, and most hotels offers a buffet with rolls, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, homemade pastries, juice and coffee. Breakfast is usually served 7.30–10am.

Lunch (pranzo, or colazione) is served 12.30–2.30pm, though a limited number of places in Florence’s centre will serve food throughout the entire afternoon. Cafés will always provide something to fill the gaps for a mid-afternoon snack (merenda).

Dinner (cena) begins at around 7.30pm, and is traditionally a fully-fledged affair of four courses.
